R- Airhead Twins (R-bikes, 1969-1995): bikes for sale

Newest Ads first (29 Ads Total, 25 on this page)

1975 BMW R-Series

Offered here is a nice R90S with an indicated 56,000 miles. This is a genuine R90S with matching frame and engine numbers. The headstock number plate is missing, likely removed when the bike was repainted. These bikes were originally either silver or orange so this one has been repainted in black at some point.

The R90S series also had a fairing and a fairing is included but not on the bike. There is silver underneath the blue paint on the fairing indicating the fairing may have originally been silver. One of the mount points on the fairing needs repair and this can be seen in the photos.

This "S" runs very strongly with all controls working as they should. Recent service includes oil change, new battery, and overhaul of front brake calipers. We can arrange shipping at reasonable cost just about anywhere in the U.S. Contact us for a shipping quote.

1977 BMW R100RS

Bike is in good running condition and fair cosmetic shape. This bike was ridden to Alaska in 1988, then parked in a garage until I purchased it at the beginning of the summer. To bring it back from the dead I did the following:

  • Carbs sonicated and rebuilt
  • Oil and filter changed
  • Transmission, shaft and final drive oil changed
  • New battery
  • New tires and tubes
  • New starter (Euro Motoelectrics brand, about 1/3 the weight of the ancient Bosch)
  • New fuel lines
  • New brake fluid
  • New throttle cables
  • New plugs
  • Final drive splines inspected and lubed
  • New fuel filters
  • Timing, valves, etc
  • Current registration, clean title

Number 821 (mfg Feb 1977). Dual plugged. Has 38mm headers, but I believe has 40mm exhaust ports. The previous owner dropped it and cracked the right top fairing, which now has a metal band-aid on the inside. The right lower fairing seems to have been replaced because it is primed but not painted white. The paint on the wheels is showing its age. The clock was broken, fixed itself, then broke itself again.

1976 BMW R90/6

54,500 miles. New clutch, tires, points, brake fluid, fork oil. Good electrics, suspension, sound motor. The lights, indicators, tach and speedo are all good. Transmission shifts are smooth in all gears. On the gas tank, there is a small scratch and fenders have stone chips (normal wear for original paint). The inside of the tank is good, but the cap needs a new gasket (I have one, but haven't gotten around to replacing old one).

BMW R100S 1977

This is a 1977 and it came into the US just before the EPA neutered them for cleaner exhausts so it's performance is not compromised.

1000cc

It belonged to a racer who upgraded it considerably and I've owned it for many years since

It has San Jose stiffeners between forks, on steering column and rear swing arm that improve rigidity

Lightened flywheel

Megaphone mufflers for free breathing (painted)

Steel mesh brake lines

solid state ignition

Softened front springs

Rear panniers and tank bag

back rest and faring

original paint

Runs perfectlyI have had it up to 115 mph. It had more but I didn't. 126372 miles Has special emblem from BMW for a 100K mile bike.

Has had one engine rebuild a long time back

Then more recently it got honed and new rings put in. The previous owner was a racer and has other bikes, can't say for sure if this one was raced. I know he commuted regularly from Groton Vt to work in Hanover via I91 which is 100 miles per day.

1975 R90/6

Regretfully, I’m listing my beautiful 1975 BMW R90/6 for sale. This is a meticulously maintained and unmolested, low mileage bike. I spent a great deal of time looking for an R90 of this caliber and didn't intended to part with it, but circumstances dictate that I must do so. I purchased this bike from the original Texas owner who lovingly cared for it until he was no longer able to ride. It has never spent a night outdoors. It has covered a mere 29,xxx miles since new. This bike was the original owner's pride and joy, as well as mine. It spent the first 39 years of its pampered life in the gentle and dry climate of South Texas and the last three years in the gentler climate of Central Florida, and it shows. Since I had intended for this bike to be a keeper and wanted to combine the power and ride-ability of the R90 with the classic looks of the earlier /5, I added the rare (and pricey) BMW toaster tank and matching chrome side covers. I also had a high quality paint job done on the tank at great expense. The rest of the bike is still in original paint. I replaced the poorly designed and trouble prone under tank front master cylinder and cable set up with a new bar mounted unit for the /7 models. It's no longer necessary to remove the fuel tank to check the brake fluid level. I also replaced the brake hose and pads as well as both tires less than 600 miles ago. The original touring tank and fiberglass side covers will be included as well as the under tank master cylinder, brake cable and brake lever. The touring tank has a small dent on the right side. The original BMW air pump is present under the seat. The rare BMW tool kit and owner’s manual are included as well as the fiberglass tool tray. The tray has a crack but these are available new if the crack bothers the next owner. To improve handling and to also keep the bike period correct, I located and installed a set of real Koni (not Ikon) dial-a-ride rear shocks, correct for the BMW R series. If you’re familiar with these bikes, you know that the choke lever and the one-into-two cable setup for the Bing carbs leaves a lot to be desired. The cables tend to stick causing the enrichers to hang and the engine to run rough. I installed a set of Boxer Metal’s pull chokes specifically designed to address the inherent shortcomings of the original setup. This is a vast improvement over the lever and cable arrangement. The original choke setup will be included and can easily be swapped back in a matter of minutes. The plastic chrome trim strip on the bottom edge of the seat wasn’t up to my standards so I removed it and bought a new one from BMW but haven’t had a chance to install it. I may do so if time permits before the bike leaves my possession. If not, it will go to the new owner. This bike has never been down, it runs, rides, handles and stops beautifully, and is in superb cosmetic condition. The only flaws are some paint chips on the front fender and a small ding in the right side chrome tank panel. The 898 cc boxer twin starts instantly, is quiet and smooth and has gobs of power and torque. The bike has no fluid leaks. The slight improvements that I’ve made can all be easily undone, although I can’t imagine why anyone would choose to. This bike is a true attention getter and stands out in the sea of Harleys and indistinguishable new bikes. It’s a beautiful, low mileage 42 year old vintage motorcycle that can be reliably ridden and will hold its own with modern bikes. It has a fresh tune up, needs nothing and is ready to ride cross-country, if desired. The next owner will not be disappointed. Clear Florida title in my name. Click the link for pics and videos of the bike.

1981 R80 G/S

According to the April 2017 issue of Motorcyclist magazine: "The first adventure bike, the mother of the movement, and the savior of BMW's motorcycle division... that first G/S's monumental impact to BMW and the motorcycling world simply cannot be overemphasized." This is from the first year of production of approximately 6650 bikes. I brought it new in 1981 from Storm's Cycle in Grand Prairie, Texas. The bike has been well cared for and is all original except for a Wilburs rear shock. The odometers is at 27788 which is a few miles short of actual due to a brief period when it was stuck - it is now restored and working. The bike is in good running condition.

1973 BMW R75/5 Toaster Time Warp

1973 BMW R75/5 Toaster

Possibly the finest BMW R75/5 on the market today, in remarkable original condition with 41,703 miles.

Wearing it's original California Blue Plates, the bike lives up to every expectation of a California classic.  The bike lives in my building along with a collection of other vehicles, it's only ridden on dry sunny days.

The bike is a true dream to ride, I recently rebuilt the front end using 10w fork oil, refreshing a few perished rubbers along the way - handling has been restored to it's form greatness.

The engine fires first time and purrs with a calming efficiency, carrying you and a passenger with ease.

I've used this R75/5 on countless occasions for long rides up and down the PCH with my wife on the back.

I can ship nationwide for approx $600

1976 Daytona Orange R90S, 9kmi

Reluctantly due to downsizing, this 76 DO R90S with 9,000 miles is one of three being advertised for sale along with the '74 and '75 in my other ads. This was owned, babied, and maintained by the deceased owner of a former BMW Motorcycle Dealership in Maine. I have added SS brake lines, new tires, a rare after market taller windshield, and a more important oil temp gauge replaces the clock. Otherwise bone stock and no engine mods as far as I know. All three machines have been properly stored in a climate controlled room and are ready to be ridden or added to your pristine collection.
